September 17, 2014: N.F.L. Gets Warnings From Sponsors, Ticket Prices Set for Rio Olympics, How London Fashion Week Embraces Tech


1. N.F.L. GETS WARNINGS FROM SPONSORS: Major sponsors of the N.F.L. such as beer giant Anheuser-Busch, McDonald's, Visa, and Campbell Soup Company are criticizing the league’s handling of of domestic violence and corporal punishment cases involving its players, while Radisson hotels has suspended its sponsorships of the Minnesota Vikings. Associated Press: “As the NFL and various team executives navigate scandal, much is at stake: The money companies pay each year to be official sponsors—not including advertising and promotions—is worth about $1.07 billion for the league and all of its teams, according to sponsorship consultancy IEG. The NFL is a coveted partner for brands since an average of 17.4 million people tune in during a regular season NFL game, about 65 percent men and 35 percent women, according to Nielsen. 2. TICKET PRICES SET FOR RIO OLYMPICS: Ticketed events at the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics in 2016 will start at $20 and run to $2,000 for the opening ceremony, organizers announced. Some events held on the beach will be free to passersby. Associated Press: “Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes said several months ago there would be ‘subsidies for some of the tickets.’ He was asked about it after a survey showed that attendance at the World Cup was made up primarily of Brazil’s top economic classes. 3. HOW LONDON FASHION WEEK EMBRACES TECH: With more than 90 percent of the shows at London Fashion Week streamed live, the event has a reputation as embracing digital technology. Here’s what some of the brands are doing. Advertising Age: “On YouTube, Burberry trialled a new beta function, allowing viewers to watch highlights from the show while moving through layers of content, including stories behind the season's inspiration, the show's soundtrack, the latest make-up look and reactions from the guests as they took their seats. … Another historic British brand, Hunter—famous for its wellington boots—pioneered a fashion partnership with real-time video start-up Grabyo, tweeting different 10-45 second clips from its runway show to followers according to the weather conditions in their location.” http://bit.ly/1ARYAaj
