Restaurant Stars Help Citymeals-on-Wheels

April 20, 2001
It was a who's who of the restaurant business at the 21 Club for the kickoff reception for Citymeals-on-Wheels' annual Corporate Dineout Campaign. For this unique fund-raising program, more than 140 of New York's best restaurants donated tables for six at their establishments. Then corporate or private donors paid $2,500 for each table. Va Maughan, chairperson of Citymeals' organizing committee, announced that the campaign has already raised $400,000 for the nonprofit's programs to deliver food to homebound elderly New Yorkers.
The event, which kicked off the first day that corporations and other patrons could use their tables, included a raffle among restaurant owners and chefs who donated tables. Mark Strausman of Campagna won a weekend for two at Dom Perignon's Chateau de Saran in the heart of France's Champagne region. (Strausman, who was chosen to win a prize at this event a few years ago but was passed over because he was not present, was grateful that he attended the event this year.)

The room was filled with a charming, well-dressed crowd of people from some of the best places in town, including Drew Nieporent of Myriad Group, Charlie Palmer of Aureole,
Michael McCarty of Michael's, Julian Niccolini and Alex Von Bidder of the Four Seasons, Marion Scotto of Fresco by Scotto, Tony Fortuna of the Lenox Room, Penny and Peter Glazier of Glazier Group, Alan Stillman of Smith & Wolensky and Jaques Capsouto of Capsouto Freres. Even fashion icon Pauline Trigere was there, showing off the latest issue of People magazine that features a story about her called "Elderly Chic."

Bryan McGuire of 21 Club hosted this year's reception for his fellow restauranteurs, and John Esposito of Dom Perignon provided the Cuvee Dom Perignon 1990, one of the company's most extraordinary vintages. Lynn McGuire, Citymeals' director of special events, orchestrated a flawless event complete with a goodie bag that included a delightful plush bear from Bear Stearns, a sponsor for the corporate dineout program.
