Tina Brown Takes Moguls From Manhattan

Posted 03.19.01
If Manhattan's party scene seemed to have fewer powerful people than normal last week--or less hot air--blame Tina Brown. Talk magazine's first Innovators and Navigators conference took lots of media, political and business bigwigs to the Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara for a three-day gabfest. Guests included designer Donna Karan, Bertelsmann head Thomas Middelhoff, talking head Diane Sawyer, writer Michael Crichton, MTV's Tom Freston and the William Morris Agency's Jim Wyatt. One notable no-show: Scheduled keynote speaker Rudolph Giuliani, who canceled after questions about the ethics of letting conference sponsor Talk Miramax (which will publish Hizzoner's memoirs) pay for his trip. The Conflicts of Interest Board ruled the trip was OK, but Giuliani cancelled, saying, "It's just too much of a hassle," reported The New York Post. It's just one of a long list of examples why you should be prepared for a last-minute cancellation from an event speaker.
