The 33rd Toronto International Film Festival opens September 4 with a gala presentation and the world premiere of Passchendaele, written, directed, and produced by Canadian filmmaker Paul Gross. “It is rare that Canadians get to experience their own histories via the moving image, particularly on the big screen,” Piers Handling, director and C.E.O. of the Toronto International Film Festival Group, said in a statement. “We are honoured to open TIFF 2008 with a work as personal and passionate, as significant to both Canadian film and Canadian history, as Passchendaele.”
Passchendaele is a Rhombus Media, Whizbang Films, Damberger Film, and Cattle Company production. Alliance Films is the Canadian distributor. TIFF 2008 runs September 4 to 13. The festival's official Web site goes live June 27.
