Obama and McCain Set to Speak at Unity 2008 Convention

Unity: Journalists of Color recently announced that the presumptive Republican and Democratic presidential nominees, senators Barack Obama and John McCain, are tentatively scheduled to speak at a panel discussion that will be held during the organization’s convention next week. The discussion will be a press conference held on July 24 in the McCormick Place West Skyline Ballroom.

In a statement that has not been confirmed by either candidates’ headquarters, Unity asserted that the group is working with the candidates' camps to arrange attendance. Should the senators appear, they will address questions posed by members of various media outlets, and CNN (which is co-sponsoring the discussion with Time magazine) will broadcast the panel live from 7 to 9 p.m Central time.Unity '08 will be the fourth installation of the convention, which happens every four years and travels to different cities. The five-day gathering at McCormick Place West will run from July 23 to 27 and feature events including a film festival, a media address by Senegalese president Abdoulaye Wade, awards banquets and galas, and a five-mile walk/run; satellite events will also be held at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers. As many as 10,000 people are expected to attend, including members of the four minority journalist organizations that make up the Unity alliance.

Update: Obama has been confirmed to speak on Sunday, July 27, while McCain’s attendance has not yet been confirmed.
