1. HIGHLIGHTS FROM IMEX AMERICA: From west coast editor Alesandra Dubin: As you might expect, sustainability and technology’s effects on meetings are two of the big topics at this giant industry powwow, which kicked off Tuesday at the Sands Expo and Convention Center. Some highlights from speakers:

Rohit Talwar, C.E.O., Fast Future Research, on how online trends are affecting meetings: "More and more we’ll have tags all over everything, like this glass in front of me. Everything will have more information, intelligence. You’re seeing the first pieces of that in the event world."

And: "We're going to see the revamping of trade shows to become solution fairs and learning zones, with exhibits vetted to make sure the innovation is there [for the attendee]."

Tamara Kennedy-Hill, executive director, Green Meeting Industry Council, on sustainability: "You have to define your objectives from the beginning. And then of course we are an industry of relationships. So how are your suppliers performing? What are you asking of them in your RFP? You have to work together to find your goals are realistic and executable. It’s a journey."

John Nawn, founder, the Perfect Meeting: "The world’s full of bad design. Meetings are no exception. It’s the purposeful shaping of the form and content of a meeting [that allows it to] deliver on crucial organizational objectives."

More news from IMEX will be on BizBash.com today.

2. TRAVEL OUTLOOK: The Global Business Travel Association reports that business travel will continue to increase, but slowly, due to uncertain economic conditions in 2012. "While spend[ing] on group travel such as meetings and conventions bounced back in 2010 and 2011, the uncertainty in the economy will likely lead to a spending slowdown for meetings travel next year. GBTA projects groups and meetings travel spend to grow at 3.5 percent in 2012, about half as fast as the expected 6.8 percent growth in 2011."
