1. TWO-DAY MARATHON: As the New York City Marathon grows, planners are eying the possibility of extending it to two days. This year’s race, which takes place Sunday, has a record-breaking 47,000 runners. Race director Mary Wittenberg foresees a two-day plan that accepts as many as 100,000 runners. N.Y. Daily News: "Should the marathon expand to two days—and it can only do so if city advisers agree to such a traffic-altering plan—then same-gender, elite runners would still all race on the same day, so that different weather conditions did not skew results."

2. DIFFA'S TREND PREVIEW: From Chicago bureau chief Jenny Berg: I just got back from shooting the tables at Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS's Dining by Design, which is at the Merchandise Mart until Saturday. A few of the tables had oceanic influences. I saw a surfboard chandelier, fishbowl centerpieces, votive candles embedded in sand, and one table that had a coral-filled, copper bathtub as its base.
Black-and-white color schemes were in several vignettes, and whimsical, childish themes—the circus and Alice in Wonderland—influenced others. I ran into Heffernan Morgan Ronsley special projects manager Nikki Lee, putting the finishing touches on the group's table: “A trend I've noticed is layered patterns, which is huge in design right now. It trickled down from fashion—think of this season's polka-dot tights—to interior design. And event design is, after all, interior design for one night.”
Of course, in addition to trends there were interesting one-off details, including mini origami swans as drink garnishes and rolled up oriental rugs that created a log-cabin setting in one vignette. We’ll have photos on BizBash.com next week.
3. GERVAIS BACK TO GLOBES?: The Hollywood Foreign Press Association may have asked Ricky Gervais to host the Golden Globes again, although the president of the H.F.P.A. said comedian "definitely crossed the line" during with off-color jokes during his last go-round. The awards will be held January 15, with nominees being announced December 15. The deadline for motion picture and television submissions is today. New York Post:

5. GROUPON MARKETING: The coupon site has seen a direct correlation between its marketing budget and subscribers—as it decreased marketing spending, it saw a drop in paying customers. Ad Age: "For Groupon, marketing expense consists primarily of targeted online ads, including sponsored search, ads on social networks, email marketing campaigns, loyalty programs and affiliate programs, according to public filings. It spent $466.5 million in online marketing initiatives during the first nine-months for subscriber acquisition and expects to continue to spend 'significant amounts to acquire additional subscribers.'"

Google is channeling Apple and Nintendo today. Go to Google's homepage and type in the words "do a barrel roll." The search page will spin, similar to what Apple's iPhones and iPads can do with their built-in accelerometers, or an element of Nintendo's "Star Fox" video game.
