1. RACISM TAINTS RESPONSE TO TRAILBLAZING MISS AMERICA WINNER: Miss America made history by crowning its first contestant of Indian descent. But the reaction on Twitter falsely labelled winner Nina Davuluri a Muslim and called her "Miss 7-11." The online vitriol affected some viewers' desire to connect with the pageant on social media, according to CNN: "I'm not going to click on #MissAmerica. I could do without a whole bunch of racism directed at brown people right now. Thanks," tweeted Josh Shahryar. http://bit.ly/1diav7u

2. CAN A MAGAZINE PUBLISHER HOST AN UPFRONT?: Hearst is hosting an event for media buyers next month that it's calling an "upfront," borrowing the concept from TV networks that preview their upcoming lineups to sell advertising. Ad Age: "Media buyers complimented Hearst for building excitement around magazine media but questioned whether the 'upfront' concept really flies for publishing. TV's annual upfront parties, presentations, and subsequent negotiations for ad time in the upcoming season are predicated on limited inventory. 3. MILEY'S TWERKING AT V.M.A.S PROMPTS FEDERAL COMPLAINT: More than 150 people sent complaints to the Federal Communications Commission over Miley Cyrus' performance at MTV's Video Music Awards last month. Since the F.C.C. does not regulate cable television, however, the complaints will not lead to any consequences for the network. Hollywood Reporter: "On Twitter, Cyrus' V.M.A. performance sparked reactions ranging from outraged to supportive and garnered more than 306,000 tweets per minute during the East Coast airing of the show, which was blasted by the Parents Television Council for serving sex to teens." http://bit.ly/18qXfhq

BOSTON:  Cook opened in Newton on Saturday. The 80-seat restaurant serves wood-fired flat breads, fried chicken, and bacon-wrapped trout.

CHICAGO:  Victory Gardens will host its Chicago Stories Gala at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on October 25. The evening will include a special tribute to Roger Ebert and feature 10-minute plays written by different authors.

Scott Hichew has joined Gavel International, the meeting and incentive travel management firm, as account director.

Kohl Children's Museum of Greater Chicago will host its "An Evening to Imagine" gala on October 12. Held at the museum's Glenview campus, the event will include cocktails, dinner from J&L Catering, and dancing to the Bill Pollack Orchestra.

MADISON, WISCONSIN:  All Pro Eating's only officially sanctioned National Pizza Eating Championship this year will take place at Ian’s Pizza in Madison, Wisconsin, September 21 and plans to attract the world’s top independent competitive eaters.
