March 21, 2014: What Alcohol Brands Spend on Event Marketing, How to Break Into Luxury Events, New Ticketing Company Targets Nightclubs

1. HOW MUCH ALCOHOL BRANDS SPEND ON EVENT MARKETING: A report from the Federal Trade Commission reveals how alcohol brands spend their marketing dollars, with 17.8 percent of budgets spent on sponsorships of sports and entertainment events. That’s behind traditional media (31.9 percent) and point-of-sale efforts (28.6 percent). For the first time, the report looked at the industry’s digital marketing spend and recommended changes to reduce exposure to underage consumers. Adweek: http://bit.ly/1dwu8aT

2. HOW TO BREAK INTO LUXURY EVENTS: Kathy Romero, director of wedding planning for Preston Bailey Designs, offers some motivational advice for planners who want to take on larger-scale luxury weddings in a post on Bailey’s blog. She advises planners to come up with original ideas rather than copying ideas of other professionals, and she says to “believe that there is room for another brilliant idea and that you are able to come up with it.” http://bit.ly/1phA1xP

3. NEW TICKETING COMPANY TARGETS NIGHTCLUBS: A start-up—only operating in the United Kingdom for the moment—is offering ticketing and promotion services to nightclubs for local acts and DJs, like a Tickemaster for nightclubs. TechCrunch: “It’s aiming to replace old school promotional tactics of flyers pressed into the sweaty palms of dancers filing out of the club after a six-hour toe-shaking session. And paper tickets that have to be tracked down by ringing a promoter’s mobile number and meeting them on a street corner.” http://tcrn.ch/1r4zfIi
