1. HOW A MULTI-VENUE MUSIC FEST USED APPS TO INCREASE ATTENDANCE: While it can be difficult for music festival attendees to catch all their favorite artists at a multi-venue event, last month's 10-day Noise Pop Festival in San Francisco saw badge holders going to twice as many events as they had in past years. The festival's general manager, Dawson Ludwig, said the higher attendance rate was because of the event's new collaboration with ride-sharing app Lyft and DoStuff Media's event app. Forbes: "Through the Lyft collaboration, instead of attendees spending 15 minutes walking from one stage to the other at a traditional field festival, they spent 15 minutes (or less) going from one venue to the other. The result is a festival experience where fans can see artists in their natural habitat — clubs. … The DoStuff app sent alerts throughout the festival of music recommendations and geo-targeted notifications, like updated set times when entering a venue and alerts to exclusive secret shows. Along with typical festival app features like maps, artist bios and venue/stage details, DoStuff rounds out the collaborative triumvirate by also recommending when the best time to catch a Lyft to head to the next venue is based on the user’s custom schedule." http://onforb.es/1prTOSR
2. WHY ONE NEW YORK FASHION WEEK VENUE IS TAKING ANOTHER TO COURT: Pier 59 Studios in New York filed a lawsuit against Spring Studios on Monday, accusing Spring Studios—which will host Tribeca Film Festival events next month—of misleading clients with its rental standards, and by characterizing itself as a photography studio. The Hollywood Reporter: “At 100,000 square feet, Pier 59 would like to claim title to being ‘the largest studio complex of its kind in the world; but the problem is that Spring Studios touts a photographic and film studio encompassing over 150,000 square feet of space. Pier 59 asserts in its complaint that Spring Studios ‘leases less than 31,000 square feet,’ and as a possible explanation for the discrepancy, adds, ‘The amount of 'studio square footage' or 'studio space' within a studio facility is commonly understood in the industry to be considered the actual space within the studio that is usable for actual shooting, and does not include ancillary facilities.’ … And what about a certificate of occupancy allowing for 1,600 people? ‘Upon information and belief, defendant Spring Studios is mischaracterizing its facility as a photography studio because it cannot be feasibly used for the purpose of a photography studio where the photography equipment used inside its studios would pose a hazard if the studio ever did reach its maximum allowable capacity of 1,600 people,’ adds the complaint.” http://bit.ly/1Vah5Et
3. HOW RACE ORGANIZERS ADAPT TO THE MILLENNIAL RUNNING OBSESSION: The RunningUSA- and RacePartner-sponsored Millennial Running Study, released in February, surveyed more than 15,000 millennials and found that most have taken up running as a lifestyle to lose weight and stay in shape. As millennials’ popularity with running grows, the study’s lead researcher, Amy Thayer, said race event organizers have had to prepare accordingly—and that many millennials are simply looking for a quality experience, rather than V.I.P. packages and virtual training sessions. The Washington Post: “That age group makes up 43 percent of the participants in the large, challenging Rock ’n’ Roll marathon events, said Keith Kendrick, chief marketing officer of the Competitor Group, which owns and operates the series. While millennials are often pegged as being unsure of what they want, Kendrick said that kind of participation supports the survey’s findings that millennials put a high value on being authentic. … ‘Clearly, we have to do business the way millennials want to do business because they’ve been served so well through the iPhone and Xbox and the way they consume electronic media,’ said Andy Coccari, executive vice president and chief product officer for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which raises money from racers through its Team in Training program. TNT has started providing mobile-compatible fundraising tools and adapting to the innovative ways millennials host fundraising events.” http://wapo.st/1Udbbmw
