Frick Has Moving Portraits
Behind the buffet table at the Frick Collection’s Young Fellows “Dance in the Golden Age” benefit, a cutout in the wall surrounded by a gilded frame featured models posing as living portraits mimicking famous 17th-century paintings. (We watched many guests admiring the art suddenly .php when it subtly moved.) Martin Duus, vice director for external affairs, worked with Robert Maloney to create the captivating visual—a simple, feasible, and effective piece.
Upfront Is a Wacky Carnival
Imagined by “Adult Swim” creative team Jacob Escobedo and Brandon Lively, Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” upfront presentation featured a wacky carnival complete with games, funhouse mirrors, a freak show, and bellowing carnies. Escobedo wanted to create a memorable way to showcase the eccentric qualities of the network’s shows. For a twist on a typical gift bag, guests won their swag by playing games—like roulette and a ring toss—and lining up for a kissing booth manned by a drag queen.
National Geographic Has Live Animals and Games
Kiera Hynninen, senior vice president of marketing for the National Geographic Channel, and J. B. Miller of Empire Entertainment planned a fun-and-games-filled upfront for the network. To tie in with the cable channel’s diverse programs and specials, the diversions ranged from games to a baby animal zoo. To emphasize the channel’s wildlife programming, All Star Animals provided a kangaroo joey, a leopard cub, two bear cubs, and an iguana. Handlers fed and cradled the animals and answered questions from guests.
PlayStation Puts Gadgets in Fashion Show
Best Events kicked off Los Angeles Fashion Week with the launch of the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld video game system by making Sony’s gadgets a fashion accessory as well as a source of entertainment. The PSPs were on a runway show and everywhere at the post-show party. From PSPs dangling from the ceiling to the sexy cocktail waitresses from Beauty and the Bar who circled the room with PSPs attached to their wrists, guests had plenty of opportunities to touch and play (with the games, that is, not the staff).
Moby Sings at W Hotel
The W Hotel chain staged a two-month series of promotional events covering everything from music, film, beauty, fashion, food, and literature, with guest appearances by DJ Chef, fashion designer Jade Howe, author Tama Janowitz, and photographer Victor Skrebneski. One highlight: Moby launched his fittingly named new album, Hotel with an unplugged performance at the W New York.
