1. C2 Montréal
1. C2 Montréal
Montreal
In 2020, one of Montréal’s most important annual gatherings was forced to re-envision itself. After postponing the spring event, which was slated to take place in May, organizers pivoted and unveiled C2 Online—Montréal 2020. The completely digital event, held in October, featured a roster of speakers representing diverse fields including entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk, author Malcolm Gladwell and e-sports pro Stephanie Harvey. Tickets also included access to the Braindate platform, which allowed participants to connect virtually. For 2021, the hybrid event, held last month with an intimate in-person experience at performance complex TOHU, boasted a reimagined event platform called C2Agora, along with a new virtual networking space. 2. Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference
Sun Valley, Idaho
After a year hiatus, hundreds of the world's most powerful people in tech, media and financial markets including New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg gathered again in August in Sun Valley, Idaho, for the exclusive Sun Valley Conference—dubbed “summer camp for billionaires”—organized by the investment bank Allen & Company. Because of the pandemic, the family-run firm canceled the event last year for the first time in its history. Much of the programming for this year’s weeklong retreat took place outdoors in the Sun Valley Pavilion, an open-air amphitheater, as part of COVID-19 health and safety measures. Next: Summer 2022
3. Sohn Investment Conference
3. Sohn Investment Conference
New York
Every year, portfolio managers, private investors and asset allocators gather at New York’s Lincoln Center for the Sohn Investment Conference. For many of the event’s Wall Street-elite speakers, the event is the only public forum in which they share their coveted insights all year. Ticket sales benefit the Sohn Conference Foundation, which funds initiatives to cure and treat pediatric cancer. The 2021 virtual event, held in May, raised $1.5 million. Next: TBD 2022

4. Milken Institute Global Conference
4. Milken Institute Global Conference
Los Angeles
The Milken Institute’s Global Conference brings together top players in business, technology, government, philanthropy, health care and entertainment to discuss major issues that affect the world today. The 23rd annual conference, held virtually in October 2020, centered on the theme “Meeting the Moment,” with an agenda that addressed the dual crises of a global pandemic and social injustice. The 2021 in-person event, held last month at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif., hosted 2,000-plus participants, down from the usual 4,000-plus, due to the pandemic and COVID-19 restrictions. It focused on how the disruptions and innovations of the recent past can be reframed for the future. Next: October 2022

5. Roth Conference

Los Angeles
Just as the pandemic was taking hold in the U.S., Roth Capital Partners pivoted to a virtual version of its 32nd annual three-day investor conference, which was presented via a custom-built portal in mid-March 2020. This year’s conference, which took place in March, was also a virtual-only event, featuring a platform that facilitated networking, one-on-one get-togethers and opportunities to participate in entertainment and athletic charity events—a well-known tradition at the annual conference. 6. UBS Global TMT Conference
6. UBS Global TMT Conference
New York
In December 2019, top analysts and bankers offered their expertise across the tech, media and telecom sectors to 1,500 investors during panel presentations and one-on-one and group meetings at the New York Hilton Midtown. In 2020, the event went virtual, and will be hosted digitally again at the end of this year. Next: Dec. 6-8, 2021

Smooth Moves: How to Create Engaging Transition Moments at Events
Moving guests from one room to another can be an unexpected place for some surprise-and-delight moments.
“We once had a premiere for a show that was set in New Orleans, and transitioning 250 guests from the screening room to the after-party was an opportunity for us to enhance the experience by bringing in a New Orleans-style second line band—who led the entire audience across a busy NYC street,' remembers Vox Media's Tara Reilly. 'It not only created a smooth transition, but it gave our audience an unexpected experience that was memorable and sparked conversation.”
