TODAY'S CALENDAR: Canadian International Autoshow continues in Toronto

* INCOMING *

1.  OSCAR EVENTS PREVIEW: From Los Angeles bureau chief Alesandra Dubin: The 84th annual Academy Awards Sunday will bring on their heels a whirlwind of related parties, suites, and other events, big and small. But on the big night this year, don't expect a major shake up to the importance of the top three major events—the Governors Ball hosted by the academy, Vanity Fair's viewing bash, and the Elton John AIDS Foundation fund-raiser—which will be back on the scene commanding their typical A-list guest attendance and frenzy of media attention (albeit with some format and venue changes). Afterward, however, newcomer Maxim will attempt to claim ownership of the late-night spot.

Here's our roundup of the week's events, parties, and suites:

2. MARKETERS START PINNING: Brands are beginning to see that the scrapbooking Web site Pinterest is a powerful tool for marketing products. Adweek: "...Retailers such as West Elm and Nordstrom have watched the beautiful-looking, easy-to-use Pinterest—which enables users to grab and save images from across the Web—become a growing source of online referrals. In January, Pinterest drove more referral traffic than Google+, LinkedIn and YouTube combined, per Shareaholic. This month, per comScore, Pinterest hit 11.7 million unique visitors in the U.S., most of them women."

3. TRADE SHOW SUCCESS: Trade Show News Network editor in chief Rachel Wimberly contends the industry is healthier than ever: "Even shows that that went through some really tough times the past few years, like Hanley Wood Exhibitions’ World of Concrete, saw increases in their numbers this year. I have no doubt this trend will continue."

4. SPENDING TO MAKE MONEY: Forbes: "Companies that reduce their sales and marketing budgets in this tough economy—as most have—are doing exactly the wrong thing. While many are trying to cut their way out of the recession, the companies that are thriving in this economy are growing their way out by investing more in sales and marketing. And by capitalizing on new trends, such as social media and technology, to reach out to their customers."
