November 5, 2014: How to Plan a 450th Anniversary, Social Media Lessons From Movember, Cannes Announces New Fashion Partners

1. HOW TO PLAN A 450TH ANNIVERSARY: Next year, the city of St. Augustine, Florida, will celebrate its 450th anniversary with a series of events produced with a $1 million budget. Creating an enticing mix of events—from galas to historic exhibitions to a Spanish wine festival—is essential to drawing in tourists and generating publicity for the city. St. Augustine Record: “From the perspective of marketing St. Augustine as a premier tourism destination, it is essential that there are enough events to get the attention of the media outside of St. Johns County, so over time, visitors will think of St. Augustine and come here,” said Richard Goldman, chief executive officer for the St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and the Beaches Visitors and Convention Bureau. “These events will have a long-term residual pay off for locals.” http://bit.ly/1qpbrw5

2. SOCIAL MEDIA LESSONS FROM MOVEMBER: It’s the time of year for Movember, the mustache-growing movement during the month of November intended to raise money for men’s heath issues. And much like the Ice Bucket Challenge, its success holds plenty of lessons for building a viral campaign. HubSpot: “One of the most interesting findings about Movember is that it isn’t confined to November at all. While it may not have reached the fever pitch yet, Movember participants are out there early, setting the stage, readying their friends, and circulating the hashtag a full month in advance.” http://bit.ly/1tznj1X

3. CANNES ANNOUNCES NEW FASHION PARTNERS: The fashion conglomerate Kering is one of the new official partners of the Cannes International Film Festival and will focus on women in cinema. Fashion Times: “The parent company of Gucci, Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Brioni and other brands plans to benefit from media exposure during the event. The alliance also enables Kering's clothing and accessories brands to become partners of the festival.” http://bit.ly/1ojXbZQ
