The massively popular Eurovision Song Contest was not broadcast on American television, but fans could find it at a viewing party at the Austrian Embassy Saturday. Sponsored by the Washington, D.C., Cluster of the European Union National Institutes for Culture, the event drew nearly 300 people to watch it on an 18-foot screen with Dolby surround sound. Red Bull sponsored a bar, and guests received a free drink upon entry.
This was the second viewing party of the American Idol-like contest, following last year's event at the Goethe Institute. It was moved to the Austrian Embassy because it could handle large crowds. This year's event pre-sold 250 tickets, but more were expected at the door.
