November 17, 2015: Activists Continue Plans to Protest Climate Summit in Paris, Official Suggests Emergency Drills at Venues, Hollywood Scales Down Red Carpets Following Paris Attacks

1. ACTIVISTS CONTINUE PLANS TO PROTEST CLIMATE SUMMIT IN PARIS: A climate summit scheduled to take place in Paris later this month will go on as planned, with high-profile participants including President Barack Obama. Environmental activists also are maintaining their plans to protest at the event, despite increased security following the terrorist attacks last week that left at least 129 people dead. Mother Jones: "’It is absolutely necessary that we make sure civil society actions can happen,’ said Juliette Rousseau, a spokesperson for Coalition Climat 21, a major umbrella group backed by American environmental organizations such as 350.org and Avaaz. … But on Monday, French officials appeared to suggest they would block rallies and side events that were scheduled to take place outside the main negotiations. Prime Minister Manuel Valls told RTL radio that ‘a series of demonstrations planned will not take place and it will be reduced to the negotiations…a lot of concerts and festivities will be canceled.’" http://bit.ly/1lszQVz

2. OFFICIAL SUGGESTS EMERGENCY DRILLS AT VENUES: Event venues should practice how they would respond to the kind of attacks that took place in Paris last week, suggested the Brooklyn borough president, Eric Adams. New York Daily News: Adams will meet “with managers of local theaters, catering halls, malls and other large gathering spaces to outline protocol for dealing with a terror attack. Training to deal with a shooter in the building should become as commonplace as a fire drill, said the former NYPD cop.” http://nydn.us/1QEtxdw

3. HOLLYWOOD SCALES DOWN RED CARPETS FOLLOWING PARIS ATTACKS: Lionsgate scaled back the Los Angeles premiere of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, and other entertainment programs and events have acknowledged the terrorist attacks with moments of silence and other acts. Associated Press: "In many ways I feel torn, because it's like, 'Why am I up here dancing and having fun when people are crying over the loss of their loved ones?'" Madonna told fans at a concert in Stockholm. "However, that is exactly what these people want to do. They want to shut us up. They want to silence us, and we won't let them. We will never let them." http://apne.ws/1RZKEVI
