LOS ANGELES—The 2025 ESPYS Presented by Capital One lit up LA's Dolby Theatre on July 16, bringing together the biggest names in sports and entertainment for a night of celebration, emotion, and a few surprises.

Hosted by controversial comedian Shane Gillis, the live broadcast on ABC and ESPN+ opened with a monologue that drew a mixed response, thanks to jabs at figures like Donald Trump, Bill Belichick, and Caitlin Clark. But the tone quickly shifted, giving way to standout athletic moments, powerful speeches, and high-energy performances that kept the star-studded crowd—which included Angela Bassett, Ciara, Russell Westbrook, and Anthony Ramos—fully engaged.

Top honors went to Simone Biles, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Suni Lee, and the Philadelphia Eagles, while musical performances from Busta Rhymes, Clipse, and GELO kept the crowd on their feet.

True to tradition, the ESPYS also made space for stories of strength beyond the scoreboard: Former NBA player Oscar Robertson was recognized with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage; Penn State women’s volleyball coach Katie Schumacher-Cawley earned the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance; and the Pat Tillman Award for Service went to LA wildfire first responders (and former athletes) David Walters and Erin Regan.

There was also a surprise USC marching band tribute for ESPN broadcasting legend Lee Corso, plus a standing ovation for former WNBA player Diana Taurasi and former USWNT player Alex Morgan, this year’s Icon Award recipients. “To the women who came before us, it’s because of you that we never have to apologize for speaking up or for fighting to raise the bar," said Morgan.

Beyond the awards and performances, the ESPYS continue to raise awareness and funds for the V Foundation for Cancer Research; the partnership has garnered more than $265 million to date. Scroll down for a behind-the-scenes look at the inspiring night—co-produced by ESPN and Full Day Productions—plus highlights from its buzzy after-party and surrounding events.

The 11th Annual Sports Humanitarian Awards
The 11th Annual Sports Humanitarian Awards
AKJOHNSTON Group and ESPN collaborated for their third consecutive year to produce two ESPYS events on back-to-back days. The 11th annual Sports Humanitarian Awards took place on July 15—the day before the ESPYS—at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood. The event kicked off ESPYS week with nominees and honorees including Sports Philanthropist of the Year honoree Michele Kang and Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award honoree Billy Bean.

Tasked with transforming the Ray Dolby Ballroom for both the awards dinner and the following day's official after-party, the AKJOHNSTON team set out to create a dynamic environment that captured the spirit of sport, celebration, and storytelling all within the same four walls. The concept? Reimagine the ballroom as a stylized arena, where the heart of competition met the elegance of a gala.

The two opposing “goals” served as platforms for presenters and honorees, connected by a sleek black dance floor that acted as the “field.” A 16-foot custom projection scrim added a sense of movement and energy, echoing the spirit of the game. Dinner seating surrounded the space in a layout reminiscent of a stadium. “Designing two completely different events in the same space within 24 hours is always an ambitious and creatively fulfilling challenge for a team,' said Emily N. Crawford, senior producer for AKJOHNSTON Group. 'We wanted the room to feel like an immersive arena where storytelling, celebration, and impact played out center stage for not just one, but two events.'

Screens and visuals were layered into the space, including large mirror structures with impactful quotes from popular athletes. 'From honoring athletes changing the world to celebrating the biggest moments in sports, our goal was to build experiences that didn’t just look incredible, but feel unforgettable,' added Crawford.

Lighting played a key role in shaping the space—defining zones, guiding transitions, and channeling the high-stakes energy of game night. Sweeping spotlights, bold accent colors, and architectural lighting cues evoked the drama and scale of a grand arena. The event featured artist performances by hip-hop duo Clipse, with additional entertainment by DJ Precise.

Another must-attend spot for star athletes and VIPs was the 2025 ESPYS Athlete Lounge. Held at the Four Seasons Los Angeles, the lounge hosted two days of celebration, custom experiences, and gifting from brands like Gatorade, Hugo Boss, Samsonite, JVN Haircare, and Yeti.

Event Eleven's senior producer Amanda Dodge led up the event's design and production, working with ESPN's Lauren Barsamian, director of sports brand solutions. 'Our goal was to completely reimagine the space so even returning guests would experience something fresh,' said Dodge. 'The Four Seasons already had a stunning foundation, so our focus was shifted to honoring the athletes and their accomplishments through the design.'

'Curating the furniture is always a highlight for us. It’s how we make a lounge feel like home,' noted Dodge. 'We prioritize comfort and variety, mixing different styles to keep the space dynamic and inviting. The goal is to create a place where the guests truly relax and stay awhile.'

Other on-site highlights included a putt-putt course from Celebrity Greens. 'When we saw the Four Seasons lawn, we knew we wanted to create something interactive and fun for the athletes, and the putting green felt like the perfect fit,' explained Dodge, noting that the green was accessible to all guests throughout the event. 'We even hosted a friendly happy hour competition with prizes from LA Golf to entice guests to interact with the space. It brought great energy to the event and added another layer of playfulness.'
