The July 13 debut of Fête Paradiso brought a rare collection of 19th- and 20th-century rides and games to Governors Island—a festival that will remain open to the public through September 29.

Rides include a bicycle carousel from the late 19th century, one of only two in the world that were created in Paris to encourage the use of what was then the new mode of transportation: the bicycle. (The other carousel can be seen in the film Midnight in Paris.)

Produced by Josh Wood Productions, part of the Plaza's appeal was the juxtaposition of the baroque architecture and gilded details with the modern designs by some of the world's most fashion-forward designers.

To support C.F.D.A. president Diane von Furstenberg's desire for this year's awards to have a 'one point of view' design ethos, a 35- by 19-foot projection screen displayed rotating black-and-white images taken at the historic Alder Manor in the Yonkers. Each room or space represented an honoree or category of nominees to keep with the night's narrative flow.

To play up the idea of metal, all the furniture was hand-wrapped in traditional kitchen aluminum foil 'to give a new look to traditional things,' said Bureau Betak founder Alex de Betak. Forty pounds of Mylar confetti covered the floor, and the brick walls were painted silver and purposefully left unfinished.

The staircase was flanked by oversize American and British flags made entirely of 150,000 red, white, and blue roses, designed to represent the punk movement's origins in New York and London. One hundred models dressed as punks later lined the steps, kitted out in ripped and torn regalia complete with spiked and dyed wigs by Redken creative consultant Guido. At the top of the staircase, past a series of sculptures underlit with rosy hues, pink-lit cherry-blossom trees, and pink fiberglass planters, was the receiving line, where the co-hosts received guests against a hedge wall of pink roses.

In the Mad Men vignette, guests entered an advertising office circa 1967 complete with a neutral-toned carpeted hallway and walls decorated with framed posters of various campaigns. As they come upon the open-plan space, they were met by a large central table surrounded by magazine cutouts, Pantone swatches, and scribbled notes. The actors in the set assumed a bevy of roles, from throwing paper airplanes while laying on a couch, to walking in and brashly throwing down an assignment.

Giant Balloons Form Living Ceiling at Museum Gala

Snarkitecture analyzed the massive venue and tackled the question of how to accentuate the volume of the space while playing with the height. The solution was to create something that generated a low plane—at certain moments the spheres hung low, creating a 'ceiling-within-a-ceiling' effect. The undersides of the balloons came down to 10 feet above guests' heads.

Of the 5,000 square feet Target utilized for the event, 2,600 square feet was dedicated to the gymnasium alone. Multiple clear vinyl tents were pieced together to make one large tent while external air-conditioning units were brought in to keep the space cool. The walls came down during the party, leaving only the roof—from which hung miles of streamers and one disco ball.
