VENUE: Tenement's Neighborly Comfort

E2781disc 02 0115 Tenament 1 152
The Lower East Side continues to boom, and the latest addition to the neighborhood's scene is Tenement, a bar and lounge on Ludlow Street. Previous tenants of the space include a brothel and gambling parlor, but the new owners have gone for a decidedly more upscale atmosphere. Exposed brick walls, cherrywood tables and a wrought iron staircase railing give the space an intimate, antiqued feel, and works by photographer Berenice Abbott from the late 30's line the walls. The rear of the space features a small lounge area with a fireplace, and a second-floor lounge would make for a good V.I.P. area for a small event. A private cellar-level dining room can seat 20. —Suzanne Ito
