The promise of event growth on downtown Los Angeles's burgeoning landscape of significant new venues is already materializing. On Sunday, the Nokia Theater at L.A. Live hosted 7,100 people for the 35th annual American Music Awards under the new direction of Daniel Snyder, owner of Dick Clark Productions, the Washington Redskins football organization, and Johnny Rockets. Dick Clark produced the show.
The eclectic lineup of performers for the broadcast included Celine Dion, Rihanna, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, and Mary J. Blige, with numbers including a country-soul version of "Irreplaceable" with Sugarland and Beyoncé, and Alicia Keys’s "No One" remake with a Jamaican twist featuring Sean Paul and Shabba Ranks.
After the show, two separate after-parties took place on the roof of the nearby Olympic parking structure. “We really wanted to have two different parties with two different flavors,” said Dick Clark Productions senior vice president of communications Terry Fahn.

On one side of the parking lot, the official after-party for 1,500 guests featured a dance floor, buffet-style catering by Wolfgang Puck, and a Johnny Rockets counter. The other side of the parking structure hosted Snyder’s private after-party, styled as a high-end lounge with a water wall, warm lighting, and a big celebrity factor. “We wanted to honor the past with everything Dick Clark has done, and celebrate the future with Dan Snyder,” Fahn said. The menu was inspired by dishes at L.A. restaurant Cut, and the party also featured a martini bar and a cigar station.
“We were able to create a bigger awards show with bigger arrivals and bigger after-parties with Nokia and L.A. Live," said 15/40 Productions's Craig Waldman, who produced the awards' red carpet and after-parties.
