#2 Media Event
Lester Holt hosted the 2017 Ellies, which recognized magazines including Mother Jones, The New York Times Magazine, Eater, and New York. More than 500 magazine editors, publishers, and industry professionals attended the event, which is hosted by the American Society of Magazine Editors in association with the Columbia Journalism School. #3 Media Event
The New Yorker magazine comes to life over the three-day festival, which features talks, panel discussions, live performances, and city excursions. Twenty-thousand attendees participated in the 2016 event, which included appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Jeremy Lin, and Sarah Silverman. Next: October 6-8, 2017

#4 Media Event
Last year’s National Book Awards, hosted by Larry Wilmore, honored authors including Colson Whitehead, Ibrahim X. Kendi, and Nate Powell. This year marks the 68th annual iteration of the prestigious awards from the National Book Foundation, which recognizes the best U.S. literature. Next: November 17, 2017

#6 Media Event (new to the list)
After moving to Chicago in 2016, BookExpo America returns to New York this spring to bring together players from all segments of the book industry. The conference, held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, includes events with the likes of Jennifer Weiner, Stephen King, Scott Kelly, and Savannah Guthrie. BookCon, a two-day fan event, ends the show. Next: May 31-June 4, 2017

#7 Media Event
Cipriani Wall Street will once again set the scene for the Peabody Awards, which commend the best of the year’s electronic-media storytelling. The distinguished group of judges includes TV producer Marcy Carsey and NPR’s Eric Deggans, who whittle down a list of 1,200 entries to 60 finalists and 30 winners. Last year’s recipients included ABC Studios, BBC, Amazon Studios, and PBS NewsHour. Next: May 20, 2017
