US: NBA Star Derrick Rose's Chesstival, Duke Ellington's 124th Birthday Celebration, All Things Go Music Festival's 2023 Lineup, and More

GLOBAL: The Laureus World Sports Awards will take place in person for the first time since the pandemic on May 8 in Paris, France. The Awards Show will honor the most memorable sporting performances of 2022, including the Laureus Sport for Good Award, which recognizes either an individual or an organization who has made a significant contribution in transforming the lives of children and young people through sport.

LAS VEGAS: NBA star Derrick Rose has announced the launch of his inaugural Chesstival—a chess tournament and festival—that will be held July 7-8 at Resorts World Las Vegas. As the first high-stakes chess tournament held by a professional athlete, the weekend will play host to celebrities, professional athletes, musicians, and amateur chess players alike who will compete in a high-stakes tournament. The event will act as a platform in forwarding the expansion of chess education into underprivileged schools and prisons as a form of rehabilitation.

NEW YORK: Mercedes Ellington, the granddaughter of Duke Ellington, and the Duke Ellington Center for the Arts (DECFA) are honoring the Duke’s 124th birthday—fittingly—at The Ellington. The event will kick off on the Duke’s birthday, on April 29, with a live performance, followed by a main celebration on April 30. The celebration will feature two signature beverages crafted by The Ellington’s culinary team, performances from Danny Mixon and Antoinette Montague, and more. 

WASHINGTON, D.C.: Chef Richard Sandoval announced that dLeña is enhancing its luxury chef’s table experience. The modern Mexican restaurant now offers an eight-course menu with dishes like charred avocado with green apple relish, chile de arbol, and peanut purĂ©e; scallops ceviche with lychee aguachile, cucumber, mango, and smoke trout caviar; and wagyu tartare with preserved lemon mayo. The chef’s table experience is offered Tuesday through Saturday evenings with two seatings per night. Tickets are $160 per diner with optional beverage pairings for an additional $75, excluding tax and gratuity. 

The All Things Go Music Festival announced its 2023 lineup, and it includes headliners Lana Del Rey, Maggie Rogers, boygenius, and Carly Rae Jepsen. Other performers set to take the stage? Emerging artists like Lizzy McAlpine and Fletcher. The festival will take place Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md.
