Amanda G. Voss, CMP, 39, works in Las Vegas as vice president of sales at Bellagio Hotel and Casino. As a 2018 40 Under 40 honoree, Voss discusses her passion for the events industry.
How I got here: I have been working for MGM Resorts International since 1999, starting as a front desk agent. I started in sales as a receptionist. I always say be respectful to everyone because your receptionist could be a vice president someday.
Impressive stats: I was part of a major transformation, from the midscale Monte Carlo hotel to the superior first-class Park MGM resort. The $650 million, two-year project completely changed the original hotel and expanded its footprint while continuing to operate from 2016 to 2018. We were challenged to drive revenues when our convention environment was at times significantly smaller while expanding by more than double the original space. During the transition, we increased our catering revenues by 20 percent and room rates by 40 percent.
Specific improvement I’ve made: With the transformation to Park MGM, we doubled our function space and nurtured a major culture change from the previous midscale service operations. The team excelled at following the strategy and training I provided. It was important to stay consistent, outline a clear path and hold everyone accountable. It is achievable to change a culture that’s been there for 20 years when you believe in the team and give them the proper tools.
