On February 6, event-industry folks gathered at Chicago Union Station for an open house that had an "Aurora Borealis" theme. Along with green-and-purple lights that evoked the celestial phenomenon, two drones hovering overhead added to the otherworldly vibe—and, they doled out snacks.

Food for Thought brought in the unusual serving device, which carried chickpea meatballs. "The drone has a load-bearing capacity of 1.5 pounds, but we needed to pick hors d'oeurves that were heavy enough so as to not be blown off," said a rep for the catering company. If you're considering using a drone at your event, know that there may be some legal implications: for insurance purposes, the drones could only hover above the crowd for five continuous minutes at a time.
