October 7, 2014: How Planners Can Better Use Event Technology, What Brands Have in Store at the New Yorker Festival, Why Fashion Exhibits Are so Popular

1. HOW PLANNERS CAN BETTER USE EVENT TECHNOLOGY: A survey of meeting planners and attendees looks at how meeting planners are using technology to make meetings more productive and efficient. Press release: “The American Express Meetings & Events report, titled ‘Great Expectations: The Evolving Landscape of Technology in Meetings,’ reveals the similarities and gaps in attendee and planner expectations across three areas of technological advancement: virtual and hybrid meetings, social media and events apps." Said Issa Jouaneh, vice president and general manager, American Express Meetings & Events: "What they have in common is that as good as technology is, there is simply no substitute for in-person meetings.” http://on.mktw.net/1s7zFAf

2. WHAT BRANDS HAVE PLANNED FOR THE NEW YORKER FESTIVAL: The New Yorker Festival begins Friday, marking the 15th anniversary of the largest consumer event for Condé Nast. It also draws big-name sponsors, such as MasterCard, Acura, United Airlies, Stoli, and Häagen-Dazs. Vice president and publisher Lisa Hughes described the appeal of the festival for brands and previewed some of the activations. Adweek: “[With Acura] we’re doing a life-sized New Yorker cartoon photo booth that lets attendees go in and take a photo and then immediately communicate it to their social media channels. I think that’s a good example of using social to spread a brand’s message.” http://bit.ly/Za7UKx

3. WHY FASHION EXHIBITS ARE SO POPULAR: Across the country, people are lining up for fashion exhibitions, such as the current “Hollywood Glamour” at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, a tribute to David Bowie at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art, and “Killer Heels” at the Brooklyn Museum. New York: “Fashion exhibitions have become fine-art institutions’ guaranteed blockbusters … Fashion attracts crowds because it is that magical combination of beautiful objects with social history.” http://thecut.io/1s3gNkU
