This Year, Call Them the Cold-en Globes?

One of the reasons Angelenos love L.A. is for the year-round mild weather, natch. And another reason is for all the spectacular Hollywood-related events. And when the former reason goes awry, the latter gets affected in a big way. The record cold snap in the region over the weekend forced many event planners for the Golden Globes suites we checked out to bring in extra tenting and heaters. And at the big event, last night’s 64th annual award ceremony at the Beverly Hilton, the parties were affected too. Billy Butchkavitz’s designs for the colorful HBO party took over the hotel’s pool area with pretty floral sculptures floating in the water—but most guests opted for the relatively cramped indoor area. And we saw at least a few guests smoking just inside the door at NBC Universal’s party to avoid the cold outdoor smoking patio. And at the end of the night, we huddled perilously close to the flames of a temporary outdoor heater with Kyle MacLachlan and Heidi Klum—who was wearing a suit coat on top of her white gown with her $1 million diamond necklace and making exclamations about the frightful cold—while waiting for our cars to make their way up a gridlocked Wilshire Boulevard.
