1. Vancouver Sun Run

With about 40,000 participants, the Vancouver Sun Run is a favorite with international elite competitors, recreational runners, joggers and walkers, wheelchair competitors, teams, schools, and children. First run in 1985, the course for Canada’s largest 10k road race goes through downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park, and across the Cambie Street Bridge. The title sponsor is the city’s daily newspaper, the Vancouver Sun, while Ford is the presenting sponsor. The next race will be its 36th edition. Next: April 19, 2020

2. HSBC Rugby 7s

One of 10 stops in the HSBC-sponsored World Rugby Sevens Series, the Canada Sevens is a two-day indoor rugby sevens tournament. First held in the city in 2015, the organizers recently secured the event for Vancouver for another four years. With total attendance topping 77,000, the event generates an estimated $24 million in economic activity for British Columbia. Next: March 2020

3. Vancouver Marathon

The Vancouver Marathon race weekend includes Vancouver’s only marathon, a half marathon, an 8-kilometer race, a relay, and a kids’ run. The title sponsor for the event is BMO. Considered one of the top destination marathons in the world, it began with 32 finishers in 1972 and now annually sells out with runners from more than 65 countries. Next: May 3, 2020

4. Gran Fondo Whistler

Now in its 10th year, the Gran Fondo—the name means “Big Ride” in Italian—attracts 4,500 participants from 45 countries who ride in categories ranging from 55 kilometers to 152 kilometers between Vancouver and Whistler. Twice voted North America’s best Gran Fondo by the GranFondoGuide, the event takes riders along the stunning Sea-to-Sky highway, from downtown Vancouver to Whistler village. RBC has been the title sponsor since the event started in 2010. Next: September 2019

5. Vancouver Open

A Tennis Canada event with title sponsorship by Odlum Brown, the Vancouver Open played at West Vancouver’s Hollyburn Country Club is the largest men’s and women’s professional tennis tournament in Western Canada. Combined prize money for the event in U.S. is $200,000. Past champions have included Maria Sharapova, Marcos Baghdatis, Vasek Pospisil, and Johanna Konta. Next: August 2020

6. Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon boat races began in Vancouver at Expo 86, and the Dragon Boat Festival launched in 1989. With title sponsor Concord Pacific on board, the festival attracts 200 teams from around the world and about 100,000 spectators to False Creek. The festival combines competitive and recreational dragon boat racing with live music, family entertainment, and food. Next: June 19-21, 2020

7. BC Superweek Pro Cycling Series

With nine races over 10 days and a total prize of $140,000, BC Superweek is one of North America’s top professional cycling events. The series consists of the Tour de Delta, New West Grand Prix, Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix, Giro di Burnaby, PoCo Grand Prix, and the Tour de White Rock. Next: Summer 2020

8. Vancouver Triathlon

A Labour Day tradition for the past 17 years, the Vancouver Triathlon offers a test of endurance to approximately 550 participants ranging from the less experienced to veterans who challenge swimming, cycling, and running courses of varying distance around scenic Stanley Park and in English Bay.
