* INCOMING *

1. TONYS BETTER THAN OSCARS?: New York Times theater critic Ben Brantley thinks so: "On behalf of Broadway fans everywhere, I would like to thank the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for helping make the Tony Awards watchable again. The television presentation of the 83rd annual Academy Awards in February made film folk look cheap, synthetic, silly and desperately un-cool. It was a perfect set-up for the CBS broadcast of the 65th annual Tony Awards, which by contrast seemed like a paradigm of not good taste (that never enters the equation) but of good will, sincerity and—can I be saying this?—something approaching hipness."

Speaking of the Oscars: The Academy's announcement this week that this year's ceremony will have anywhere from five to 10 Best Picture nominees [http://bit.ly/mlmLyO] has Entertainment Weekly film critic Owen Gleiberman complaining that the awards are losing their identity: "In that doomy-peppy Talking Heads song 'Life During Wartime,' there’s a great line where David Byrne sings: 'I’ve changed my hairstyle,/So many times now,/I don’t know what I look like!' That’s how I’m starting to feel about the Academy Awards."

3. CHANGES AT PEPSI: AdAge: "The company is restructuring its marketing department to include three new marketing roles, with an eye toward embracing a more global approach. The three executives, expected to be two external candidates and one internal candidate, will take on various duties handled by Jill Beraud, chief marketing officer-PepsiCo Beverages America [who has chosen to leave the company]."
