1. TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL FOUNDER STARTS NEW EVENT: Tribeca Film Festival founder Craig Hatkoff has launched the “Anti-Summit,” a gathering focused on taking action at the event rather than just talking about it. The event, which begins Thursday in New York, is specifically designed not to be like TED, Davos, or the Aspen Ideas Festival—although it seems to attract the kinds of high-profile thinkers that attend those events. New York Post: “That means, for example, that reps from the NHL will be thrown into a room in downtown Manhattan with the Boston Blades and ESPN. The objective: figure out how women’s professional hockey teams can finally get paid. In another room, 15-year-old Thomas Suarez will be seeking engineers to help commercially develop his design for a 3-D printer, which promises to be 10 times faster than any desktop model currently on the market.” http://bit.ly/1zU2pMh
2. WHY COMPOSTING PROGRAMS HAVE TAKEN OFF AT SPORTS VENUES: More sports arenas are asking fans to compost food waste, reducing the amount of food waste and taking advantage of lower prices for compostable forks, plates, cups, and other serviceware. The New York Times: “Teams including the Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates and Portland Trail Blazers, and events like the United States Open are embracing composting because it can reduce expensive fees to send trash to landfills and incinerators. Composting avoids producing tons of greenhouse gases like methane and instead produces tons of mulch that can be used as fertilizer.” http://nyti.ms/1zU3jZo
3. YOUTUBE NETWORKS MAKE BIG PUSH AT NEWFRONTS: Several YouTube networks, also known as multichannel networks, are hosting their first NewFront presentations this year in a bit to introduce the online stars they represent to media buyers. Advertising Age: “These online video companies still manage large numbers of YouTube channels, but their businesses are more oriented around the stars behind those channels whose audiences also span Facebook, Twitter, Vine, Instagram and Snapchat. For example, Collective Digital Studio's presentation will feature YouTube stars Rhett & Link and Harley Morenstein; Vine stars Logan Paul and Princess Lauren; and Snapchat star Shaun McBride.” http://bit.ly/1z0woHG
