1. U.S. Open

A record 853,227 tennis fans made their way to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center for the 2019 U.S. Open, an attendance record that also resulted in 23 sold-out matches and 300 million social media interactions. Nearly 1.3 million people watched the event on ESPN, and 5.5 million viewers from around the world tuned in to watch the action on the U.S. Open Now live-streaming channel. At just 19 years old, Canadian Bianca Andreescu won her first Grand Slam title, while Rafael Nadal took home the men’s title after a final match that lasted nearly five hours. 2. New York City Marathon

Geoffrey Kamworor and Joyciline Jepkosgei, both of Kenya, clocked the fastest men’s and women’s times at the 2019 TCS New York City Marathon, besting a field of more than 50,000 competitors. Upwards of one million people across all five boroughs came out to watch the race, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. Next: November 1, 2020

3. Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

The 144-year-old Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, the oldest continuously held event of its kind in the country, welcomed 204 breeds from 20 countries in 2020. This year, event organizers expanded the show’s programming to fill three days of purebred canine competitions, including the Masters Agility Championship, the Masters Obedience Championship, and the Best in Show competition. In total, 2,630 dogs participated in the festivities, which drew 40,000 (human) attendees to Pier 94 and Madison Square Garden. Siba, a standard poodle, earned the title of Best in Show. 4. Belmont Stakes

This year marks the 152nd running of the Belmont Stakes, the final competition of the annual Triple Crown horse racing series. More than 56,000 fans watched as Sir Winston took top honors in 2019, earning a prize of more than $1 million. The race is the centerpiece of a three-day festival, which last year featured performances from Flo Rida, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, and the cast of the musical Rock of Ages. 5. Five Boro Bike Tour

Attracting 32,000 cyclists each year, the TD Five Boro Bike Tour is the largest bike ride in the country. The 40-mile car-free route starts in Lower Manhattan before making its way through each of the city’s five boroughs to the finish line on Staten Island. Proceeds help support Bike New York’s free education programs, as well as its efforts to make the city’s streets more bike-friendly. Next: May 3, 2020
