NEW YORK—The city that never sleeps wastes no time when it comes to putting on epic events. From massive expos at the Javits Center like the New York Auto Show and the New York Times Travel Show, to gatherings packed with famous faces like the Tony Awards and the Fragrance Foundation Awards, to citywide events like the Tribeca Film Festival and the New York City Wine & Food Festival, these events are staples of the city's collective calendar.

The fashion-forward Parsons Benefit, eye-catching Design Pavilion, and thought-provoking PEN World Voices Festival are among the new additions to this year’s list, joining category-leading staples like New York Fashion Week, the Armory Show, and the Time 100 Gala. And while major happenings like New Year’s Eve in Times Square and the U.S. Open always generate media coverage, many events favor trade-specific appeal over mainstream recognition. The Greater New York Dental Meeting, CE Week, and the World Business Forum are just a few of the gatherings that are essential to their respective fields yet may not be known to the general public.

As with all lists, these rankings are subjective. To choose and rank the annual events on this list, we look at several factors, including economic impact, buzz, innovation, and an event's prominence within the communities it intends to serve.
