Mashable—and Its Readers—Host 700 Meetups on Social Media Day

Mashable, the go-to Web site for social media-related information, hosted an international Social Media Day on June 30 as a celebration of how media is becoming more socially driven through the increasing popularity of sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare.

Company staffers hosted the meetups in their respective cities and invited Mashable readers around the world to participate by hosting local events and registering them on the site Meetup Everywhere. “We’d really like you to use this platform to continue to host regular meetups in your area,” said Mashable founder and C.E.O. Pete Cashmore in a video posted on Mashable.com. He added that the site will continually update its calendar with meetups scheduled by readers.

The formats varied from cocktail parties to discussion panels with a total of 724 events in 93 countries, some of which Mashable streamed live on its site.

Chris Renz, agency director for the BRPR Group, organized a 322-person Miami meetup at the Pelican Hotel. “We saw that this was coming up and that nobody in Miami had taken the initiative yet, so we wanted to be in charge and set it up so that Miami was one of the top cities,” Renz said.

Following the events, Mashable posted a list of the top 10 meetups based on attendance, with seven U.S. cities making the cut, including Boston, Philadelphia, and first-ranked New York.
