June 17, 2015: White House Manages Secrecy for 500-Person Party, Disney Trains Moms at Social Media Event, the Quirky Scene at Toronto’s Bestival

1. WHITE HOUSE MANAGES SECRECY FOR 500-PERSON PARTY: White House insiders marveled at how the Obamas managed to keep a 500-person party that featured performances from Prince and Stevie Wonder largely secret. The administration did not list the event on the president’s official schedule—drawing criticism for the lack of transparency—and its social media presence was surprisingly meager. The New York Times: “‘I think it’s remarkable that they kept it this quiet,’ said Bess Abell, a White House social secretary during the Lyndon B. Johnson administration. ‘I don’t know of another party this size that was kept that quiet.’ Anita McBride, who was chief of staff to Laura Bush when she was first lady, said she was similarly impressed by the secrecy. ‘It’s hard to do anything privately these days,' Ms. McBride said. 'And with this kind of talent, that’s remarkable that they managed to keep it this quiet.’” http://nyti.ms/1KYM55h

2. DISNEY TRAINS MOMS AT SOCIAL MEDIA EVENT: Disney has cultivated an exclusive group it calls Disney Social Media Moms, with bloggers and other influencers vying for perks such as deeply discounted admission to its theme parks as well as an invitation to attend the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration, which took place in May at Walt Disney World in Orlando. Business Report: “At the day-long conference, the moms attend motivational sessions and receive social media tips and Disney updates. This year, they learned how to use Pinterest data, heard from 11-year-old lemonade stand entrepreneur Vivienne Harr and listened to a Pixar producer talk about the Disney-owned animation studio. Disney reminds attendees of government requirements that they disclose the benefits they received when writing about the event. The company declined to disclose how much it spends on the programme. Disney was the first major company to tap the influence of moms across a wide spectrum of social media, but the approach is now being used to promote a range of products, including Hewlett-Packard printers and Cottonelle toilet paper.” http://bit.ly/1MKIs1d

3. THE QUIRKY SCENE AT TORONTO’S BESTIVAL: Bestival, a music festival that started on the Isle of Wight in 2004, made its Toronto debut last weekend and imported a quirky scene. Toronto Star: “Yes, this was a proper festival with solid headliners (Nas and Florence & The Machine) but also a quirky one at which you could run into a marching band on stilts, a Falun Dafa lion dance, a life-sized Jenga match and bubble battle flash mobs while running around just trying to keep up with the music acts on various stages.” http://on.thestar.com/1MEq622
