Unicef’s second annual Snowflake ball last week raised $1.7 million for the organization, drawing 700 guests to the Waldorf-Astoria. The KIPP Academy String and Rhythm Orchestra performed, and Sotheby’s auctioneer Jamie Niven auctioned a Graff platinum and diamond snowflake brooch (fetching $41,000). The event coincided with the annual lighting of Unicef’s crystal snowflake on Fifth Avenue. Snowflake ball honoree Quincy Jones, Unicef ambassadors Lucy Liu and Whoopi Goldberg, and children affected by Hurricane Katrina and the South Asia tsunami participated in the ceremony to light the snowflake.
