One of the most buzzed-about venues of this year is Suba, a strikingly modern new restaurant, tapas bar and event space on the Lower East Side. Suba's raw, yet refined interior offers exposed brick walls (a la Eyebeam Atelier), polished steel railings and stairs, wood tables and moss-green colored upholstery. The Skylight room is in the basement--really--with 14-foot ceilings, a skylight and a fully equipped DJ booth. The street level bar has a tapas lounge, and the second-floor Grotto room--the highlight of the space--is a concrete island surrounded by a pool of water and submerged lights. The Spanish cuisine includes hors d'oeuvres such as baby goat cheese tamales and citrus salmon ceviche. --Suzanne Ito
