The list of nominees for the 2002 James Beard restaurant and chef awards announced at the James Beard Foundation house on Thursday was (as usual) full of New Yorkers. For the All-Clad Cookware Outstanding Chef award, four Big Apple Chefs--Lidia Matticchio Bastianich of Felidia, Tom Colicchio of Gramercy Tavern, Nobu Matsuhisa of Nobu and Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin--will face San Franciscan Gary Danko of restaurant Gary Danko.
Manhattan favorites Chanterelle and Gotham Bar & Grill were nominated for the San Pellegrino Outstanding Restaurant award, and Tom Colicchio's Craft and Rick Laakkonen's Ilo (in the Bryant Park Hotel) were nominated for the Illy Best New Restaurant award.
And the award that will have everyone at the awards gala holding their breaths--the American Express Best Chef: New York City award--will go to one of these New York chefs: Mario Batali for Babbo, Terrance Brennan for Picholine,
Andrew Carmellini for Cafe Boulud, Rocco DiSpirito for Union Pacific, Alex Lee for Daniel.
Florian Bellanger of Fauchon and Gina DePalma of Babbo were nominated for the All-Clad Bakeware Outstanding Pastry Chef award. Jean-Francois Bruel of DB Bistro Moderne and Harold Moore of Montrachet were nominated for the Gallo of Sonoma Rising Star Chef award.
Sommeliers Paul Grieco of Gramercy Tavern and Charles Scicolone of i Trulli were nominated for the Sub-Zero Freezer Company's Outstanding Wine Service award. Andrea Immer of the French Culinary Institute and Daniel Johnnes of Montrachet were nominated for the Hudson Valley Foie Gras Outstanding Wine and Spirits Professional award.
For the Outstanding Restaurant Design award, Andre Kikoski of Andre Kikoski Architect was nominated for his design of Suba, and Thomas Leeser and Caroline Vanbiervliet of Leeser Architecture were nominated for their design of Glass.
The big awards gala--entitled the Spice Connection--is set for May 6 at the Marriott Marquis, and The View's Lisa Ling will be the host. The journalism awards ceremony--with the theme Spice Nation--will be held at the Grand Hyatt New York on May 3.
