* INCOMING *
1. TROJAN OVERCOMES PERMIT PROBLEMS: A street promotion in which Trojan planned to give away 10,000 vibrators was at first shut down by New York City officials who said the company lacked a permit, but picked up again Thursday after the company worked its way through the red tape. The heavily promoted stunt had drawn thousands to its "Pleasure Carts"—versions of the city's iconic hot dog carts—but had to turn them away after officials said the crowds blocked streets and pedestrian traffic. Thursday's event was more successful. "Within an hour, the company had handed out hundreds of the vibrators. They come in two versions, which normally sell for $30 or $40, depending on the features. Batteries were included." http://nyp.st/RvD1Zm
Here are 10 ideas from summer street promotions http://bizba.sh/Nk1sVf
2. OLYMPICS AFTER-PARTY: The Spice Girls, Adele, One Direction, and, naturally, Mick Jagger, are among the rumored performers for the Olympic closing ceremony performers. Hollywood Reporter: "As with the Opening Ceremony, the exact nature and makeup of the show and acts is a heavily guarded secret. But … it is expected to be a massive media, cultural and musical celebration." http://bit.ly/NilqDl
Both NBC and the International Olympic Committee need to make strategic changes before the next Winter Games in 2014. AdAge: "Two main economic drivers of the games—hugely lucrative TV deals and corporate sponsorships—are predicated on the Olympics' ability to preserve scarcity of their product. As technology makes that model unworkable, the IOC has felt forced to take increasingly authoritarian measures, regulating athletes' Twitter feeds and turning a city like London into a marketing police state." http://bit.ly/OYONbU
3. GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES: Ralph Lauren and Kellogg's are among the companies already signed on. Forbes: "Stars Aly Raisman and Gabby Douglas will likely earn $5 million to $10 million in sponsorship deals over the next four to five years, according to Robert Tuchman, a sports and entertainment marketing expert. 'The deals are definitely out there,'" http://onforb.es/OX8K2V
4. ORLANDO TOPS MEETINGS LIST: Corporate event planning software provider Cvent has a list of the top 50 cities for meetings and events, based on its own booking activity, with Orlando edging out Washington for the top spot. Rounding out the top five are Las Vegas, Miami, and Chicago. Bizjournals.com: http://bit.ly/P8QWp1
5. CONVENTION SECURITY: Charlotte officials have put in place measures to manage the Democratic National Convention. New York Times: "Even with 6,000 delegates and 30,000 estimated associated visitors, it will not be the largest gathering ever in this city of 760,000, but it certainly promises to be the hardest to manage. … The city will spend $50 million in federal money on security, the same amount the Republicans gathering in Tampa, Fla., have received. It will be used to hire as many as 3,400 officers from outside departments, build about five miles of nine-foot fencing and pay for, among other things, steel barriers strong enough to stop a 15,000-pound vehicle traveling 30 miles per hour." http://nyti.ms/TkKtGO
6. DEFENDING DRUMMING: A New York City teambuliding company is suing Fox News hosts Bill O’Reilly and Greta Van Susteren and a reporter for defamation after they opined on a 2010 General Services Administration awards ceremony that included spending $21,000 on commemorative drum sticks. The suit "alleges the Fox News personalities accused her of being a con artist who steals from U.S. taxpayers." Hollywood Reporter: http://bit.ly/Nht94G
