20 Cool New Venues

January 14, 2004
As the economy bounces back—bringing the event industry with it—New York is also flush with new venues. In the past few months, optimistic owners have launched some ambitious spaces, including high-priced hotels, cavernous clubs and regal restaurants. Here are 20 of them:

Alex Hotel This 203-room luxury hotel in Midtown is tailored for business travelers, with interior design by David Rockwell. The hotel includes a penthouse space for events. Opened in November 2003.

Asiate This restaurant looks over Central Park from the 35th floor of the luxe new Mandarin Oriental New York hotel. Opened in November 2003.

Cafe Opaline The Dahesh Museum's new cafe is catered by Great Performances. Opened in November 2003.

Crobar This huge west Chelsea nightspot has multiple lounges including a private room that overlooks a large dance floor. Opened in December 2003. Read more about this venue...

David Burke & Donatella David Burke—formerly of Park Avenue Cafe—and restaurateur Donatella Arpaia's restaurant serves American cuisine and seats 100. Opened in December 2003.

Dylan Hotel ballroom The space—formerly occupied by the restaurant Nyla—is now operated by Events and Celebrations by Between the Bread.

Gallery at the Gershwin The Gershwin Hotel's new bar and lounge holds 100. Scheduled to open in late January.

Geisha A David Rockwell-designed restaurant in Midtown, with a menu from Le Bernardin's Eric Ripert. Opened in December 2003.

Mandarin Oriental New York This 251-room high-end hotel in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle has a 6,000-square-foot ballroom, a boardroom and meeting rooms for events. Opened in December 2003.

Maritime Hotel This new Chelsea hotel opened its rooms, bars and restaurant last fall, but it was already getting chilly when the large outdoor terrace opened. Look for it to be a popular party spot come spring.

Marquee With two levels and 6,500 square feet of space, this new club can hold 600 amidst three distinct areas: a main floor, a red lounge and an upstairs ash-paneled mezzanine lounge. Opened in December 2003. Read more about this venue...

Megu This Japanese restaurant and bar has a private dining room that seats 10 and its own kitchen. Scheduled to open in late January.

One Little West 12th This meatpacking district restaurant and lounge includes a main floor and dining lounge, two additional lounges and a champagne and raw bar. Opened in December 2003. Read more about this venue...

Riingo Aquavit's Marcus Samuelsson brings Japanese-Scandinavian fusion to this restaurant within the Alex Hotel. Scheduled to open in late January.

Romi A sleek bilevel bar and lounge in the financial district. In February, two separate event rooms that hold 300 will be added. Opened in November 2003. Read more about this venue...

632 Hudson Once the home of a New York cast of The Real World, this West Village townhouse has more than 4,000 square feet, including a rooftop deck, garden and gazebo space within an old water tower. The space holds 125. Opened in January.

Spirit This large nightclub, performance space and restaurant is based upon a mind, body and spirit theme. Opened in December 2003.

Social Club Inspired by Cuban social clubs, this 8,000-square-foot space will feature games, lounge areas and a light menu of Cuban-inspired fare. The space holds 600. Scheduled to open in late January.

Tang The new restaurant at the Gershwin Hotel holds 110 in its dining room and also features a screening room and a private room called Room 27. Scheduled to open in February.

Tunnel The notorious nightclub has opened again as a space for events. Booking is handled through the preferred caterer, Allure Catering. Opened in December 2003.
