Spring Preview: 10 of New York's Most Anticipated New Venues

Anna Sekula
March 11, 2010

In addition to the scheduled debuts of delayed venues like the Trump Soho, Ma PĂŞche, and the W's downtown property, the next couple of months will bring a slew of new sites for events and entertaining. Here's what to expect from spring's biggest openings.

1. New Meadowlands Stadium
The $1.6 billion new home for N.F.L. teams the New York Giants and New York Jets will open in April and, in addition to 82,500 seats for football fans, the 2.1 million-square-foot sports arena will offer six club lounges designed by David Rockwell. The 42,000-square-foot Mezzanine Clubs, two identical spaces on opposite ends of the stadium, are the largest and will have bar areas, lounge furniture, and views through floor-to-ceiling windows.

2. Eventi
This 54-story property from Kimpton Hotels will offer more than its 292 guest rooms. At the northern edge of the Flatiron district, Eventi will house more than 20,000 square feet of event space, including a 4,027-square-foot grand ballroom, a 3,365-square-foot fifth-floor terrace, and a plaza with a 20-foot-wide screen. Also on site: Food Parc, a 20,000-square-foot food market and restaurant run by Jeffrey Chodorow's China Grill Management.

3. Red Bull Arena
Beset by delays—the 22-acre site was initially scheduled for a late 2008 opening—the 25,000-seat stadium for New York's Major League Soccer team is finally ready to open. Although Red Bull Arena will not have a stage for live shows as originally planned, the facility in Harrison, New Jersey, will feature three hospitality suites for non-game day events, 30 skyboxes, and a restaurant called Bull's Corner. The official opening is set for March 20 with a friendly match against Brazilian club Santos.

4. Chatwal New York
Housed inside the landmarked Stanford White-designed Lambs Club, the new hotel from Sant Chatwal, C.E.O. of Hampshire Hotels and Resorts (and hotelier Vikram Chatwal's father), will offer 88 rooms and a design by Thierry Despont. Inside, Geoffrey Zakarian will operate a 90-seat restaurant known as the Lambs Club, and a handful of meeting spaces—including a banquet area for 120—will also be available.

5. Andaz 5th Avenue
Sitting opposite the New York Public Library, Hyatt's second Andaz hotel is expected this spring and will sport a design from Tony Chi. Smaller than its sister property on Wall Street, the Andaz 5th Avenue will have 184 loft-style rooms, a bar, and two restaurants. For meetings and events, the hotel will have 6,400 square feet of flexible space, including a landscaped courtyard and a communal kitchen and dining area.

6. Fashion 26
Joining the growing number of hotels in the Flatiron district is this 280-room venue from Wyndham Worldwide. Slated to open in April, the Glen Coben-designed Fashion 26 will be marked by wood accents and contemporary furnishings. In addition to two event spaces—the largest measures 900 square feet and seats 80—the hotel will also house a Rare Bar & Grill bar, restaurant, and rooftop lounge.

7. Upstairs at the Kimberly Hotel
In April, the Kimberly Hotel will debut Upstairs, its 4,000-square-foot rooftop space with 360-degree views, retractable glass ceilings and walls, heated flooring, and a modern design from De-Spec and Pentasia Designs. Accompanying the 2,000-square-foot main room will be a 40-person enclosed penthouse room and a 50-person semiprivate patio lounge. Upstairs will serve small plates from Gwenael Le Pape, the chef of the hotel's soon-to-open restaurant.

8. Bill's Bar & Burger Rockefeller Center
The casual beer-and-burger concept that Stephen Hanson's B.R. Guest Restaurant Group debuted in the meatpacking district in October will expand to Midtown with the May opening of Bill's Bar & Burger at Rockefeller Center. Occupying an 11,000-square-foot bilevel space, the restaurant will have 563 seats and include wall murals from artists like Dan Clements and Mark Newgarden.

9. ABC Kitchen
The latest from chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten is this restaurant inside ABC Carpet & Home's flagship store, which opened for dinner service on Tuesday and will start brunch, lunch, and open its wine bar in the coming weeks. On the first floor and serving dishes made from local, sustainable, and organic produce, the 150-seat ABC Kitchen sports an eclectic look using salvaged, reclaimed, and recycled building materials and other bohemian accents.

10. Pulino's Bar & Pizzeria
Yet another eatery from another big-name restaurateur is expected to open next week. Keith McNally, the man behind Balthazar, Pastis, and Minetta Tavern, has partnered with chef Nate Appleman to open Pulino's, a pizza-focused joint on the Bowery. Like several of McNally's other spots, the 110-seat Pulino's will have white tiled walls, exposed brickwork, and vintage light fixtures.
