COAST TO COAST: BD Hotels has appointed Rani Gharbie head of acquisitions and development for the Pod Hotels, the hospitality company’s micro-hotel concept. Pod currently has locations in Times Square, Brooklyn, and Washington, and will open a hotel in Philadelphia in fall 2019 and Los Angeles in 2020.

Pop-Up Magazine, a live magazine created for the stage, will have its 2019 Spring Issue tour May 10-May 31. The event, which is sponsored by Chanel and Google, will travel to locations including Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco on May 10; the Theatre at Ace Hotel in Los Angeles on May 17; BAM Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn on May 29; and Lincoln Theatre in Washington on May 31. Contributors to the issue include Jon Mooallem of the New York Times Magazine, Mallika Rao of the Atlantic, and Jason Concepcion of the Ringer.

CHICAGO: The 14th Awards for Excellence in Sports Journalism event, benefiting the Union League Boys & Girls Club, will take place April 18 at the Union League Club.

Bob Costas will keynote the Global Business Travel Association Convention, taking place August 3-7 at McCormick Place.

LOS ANGELES: Aimed at increasing women's financial empowerment and literacy, the interactive Stacks House pop-up—founded by She Stacks and sponsored by Zelle—opens April 17. It will have money-theme photo ops and educational opportunities, and it will be open downtown through May 17.

The second annual L.A. Chef Conference, the main hospitality industry event of the Los Angeles Times Food Bowl, will take place May 20 at the ArcLight Cinemas and the Gourmandise School. The event will have panels, cooking demos, a restaurant workshop series, and a chef-driven lunch.

MIAMI/SOUTH FLORIDA: Codean, a Miami-inspired and Los Angeles-based clothing brand, will open the Codean Motel pop-up from April 12-26 at Paradise Plaza in the Miami Design District.

NEW YORK: Gin brand Monkey 47 will open an interactive, public pop-up, called the Wild Monkey, April 26-28 at 43-45 Grand Street in SoHo.

RuPaul’s Drag Race star Shangela will host the 30th annual Glaad Media Awards, taking place May 4 at the New York Hilton Midtown.

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation’s 15th annual Hamptons Happening benefit, “Tour de Cuisine,” will take place July 13 in Bridgehampton. 

More than 805 guests attended the Stars of Stony Brook gala, benefiting Stony Brook University, which took place Thursday at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers. The event announced a record fund-raising total of $28.2 million, which included $25 million from the evening's honoree Simons Foundation President Marilyn Hawrys Simons, to establish the Center for Applied Economics and Public Policy. Broadway singer Abby Mueller performed at the event.

OTTAWA: Ottawa Tourism, Shaw Centre, and Invest Ottawa have launched ThinkOttawa, a new program that will provide complimentary support to local industry, academic, government and nonprofit leaders seeking to raise the international profile of their industry by bidding to bring a global, national, or regional conference to Ottawa. 

PORTLAND, OREGON: The Corner, a new meeting and event space, will open inside Mother’s Velvet Lounge & Café this spring.

SAN FRANCISCO: The Alameda Boys & Girls Club is hosting its first food, wine, beer, and music festival fund-raiser, called Corks, Forks, Rhythm & Brews, on October 5. 

TORONTO: International Live Events Association (ILEA) Toronto will host Event Industry Trends and Forecast with David Merrell on April 24 at Hotel X. The event will be held in partnership with Senik Events and Hotel X. 

The 38th edition of the IACC Americas Connect conference took place April 10-11 at Vantage Venues and the Globe and Mail Centre. The event drew more than 230 delegates and more than 20 meeting planners from the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Australia. 

The Idea Hunter has appointed Adrienne Giroux general manager. Giroux was formerly senior director of corporate partnerships at TIFF.  

WASHINGTON: Cranes, a Japanese and Spanish restaurant and sake lounge, will open in Penn Quarter this fall in the former Ruth’s Chris space. Helmed by chef Pepe Moncayo, the 11,000-square-foot restaurant will have a “Spanish Kaiseki” menu and a private dining room that seats 25 guests.

CSI DMC, a destination and event management company based in Falls Church, has appointed Maureen Carter vice president of national sales for the West Coast region.
