CANADA: A Fundraising Cycling Challenge, Banff's Virtual Film and Book Festival, and More

NATIONAL: Childhood Cancer Canada and Coast and Coast Against Cancer Foundation have launched Breakaway Cycling Adventure, a nine-week cycling challenge that raises funds for children with cancer and supports programs like the new childhood cancer COVID-19 Emergency Fund. The event runs through Sept. 6, and offers three different category levels—challenge, fun, and family—and 27 opportunities to achieve badges. 

BANFF: The Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival is going virtual, featuring mountain culture films, speaker interviews, a virtual marketplace, and more. Tickets and access passes will be going on sale by mid-September for the Oct. 31 to Nov. 8 festival dates. After the virtual festival, the tour will continue with live events in consideration of safety and health precautions. 

EDMONTON: The Edmonton International Raceway is back to operating events with a capacity of 200 fans in the stands after shutting down due to COVID-19. With July 4 races postponed due to inclement weather, EIR plans to make up these races on July 25. All tickets will be kept on file for future events. 

MONTREAL: Vincenzo Guzzo, president and CEO of Guzzo Cinémas, announced the reopening of all nine theaters on July 3. Following government guidelines, each auditorium will hold up to 50 guests with social distancing measures in place and sanitation stations situated in the general lobby. Additionally, all staff will be wearing face shields and washing their hands every 30 minutes. 

TORONTO: The Toronto Symphony Orchestra has canceled its 2020-2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The season will now consist of smaller ensembles across the Greater Toronto Area that comply with social distancing precautions in venues including the TSO's home and Roy Thompson Hall. 2020-2021 subscription funds will be automatically applied to the upcoming season, although full refunds are available. 

VANCOUVER: The Powell Street Festival Telethon will run virtually on Aug. 1 from 2-7 p.m., with taiko drumming from the rooftop of the Vancouver Japanese Language School and a Giving Ceremony honoring the Powell Street neighborhood. Admission is free for viewers that tune in to support the 44th year of the festival.
