CANADA: Calgary's Massive Convention Center Expansion, Toronto's Virtual Comic Arts Festival and More

NATIONAL: Global brand storytelling agency INVNT has launched a higher education division dedicated to producing physical and virtual events for universities and colleges. Sarah Winkler will serve as senior vice president of INVNT Higher Ed, while JoAnn Peroutka has been named vice president of the division.

CALGARY: Construction has begun on a $500 million expansion to Calgary’s BMO Centre convention space. The renovation will double the floor space to 1 million square feet, making the BMO Centre the largest facility in Western Canada. The work is expected to be finished in 2024.

SASKATOON: For the second consecutive year, Saskatoon’s Canada Day celebrations in Diefenbaker Park have been canceled due to COVID-19. Event hosts The Optimist Club of Saskatoon do not plan to host a virtual event this year but plan to return for Canada Day in 2022.

TORONTO: The all-virtual Toronto Comic Arts Festival takes place May 8-15. Highlights of the free event will include an online marketplace where creators will sell their work, plus interactive games, Q&A sessions, live drawing and panel discussions with illustrators, video game creators and comic authors from across the country.

VANCOUVER: Canada Running Series has partnered with Siply, an app that curates the best coffee shops in Vancouver, to launch the 5K Coffee Club. The new virtual event takes place throughout the month of May; participants are invited to run 5Ks following routes created around local Vancouver coffee shops. As a reward, participants will get coupons for free coffee via the Siply app. Runners are also encouraged to make donations to Vancouver Food Runners, which helps divert food waste.
