NATIONAL: The CIBC Run for the Cure went virtual this year to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society. The event took place this past Sunday and saw more than 20,000 participants from across the country completing a 1K or 5K walk or run. More than $9 million was raised, and donations are still being accepted. Those who missed the event can broadcast it from YouTube or Facebook.
According to STR’s August 2021 data, Canada’s hotel industry has reported its highest monthly performance levels since the start of the pandemic. Overall, occupancy rates were at 65.4%; out of the major markets, Vancouver recorded the highest occupancy at 72.3%, which marks a 20% decline from 2019.
TORONTO: The Fried Chicken Fest is back in Toronto for its third year in a row. Attendees can eat all the chicken they'd like at the Street Eats Market at the Scarborough Town Centre from Oct. 9-10. There will be various food trucks with fried chicken options as well as French fries, beignets, cheesecakes and fresh fruit juices. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to various local food banks.
Northland Properties recently acquired the King Blue Hotel from Greenland Canada. The property is in its final stages of construction and is set to open this fall in Toronto's downtown entertainment district. There will be 118 guest rooms, an on-site restaurant, meeting and event space, and a rooftop terrace.
VANCOUVER: The Burnaby Village Museum is transforming its space into a Halloween illusion experience this season. Eerie Illusions is an experience for all ages that uses lighting production, soundscapes and special effects along a self-guided walking tour through the 10-acre property. The experience takes 45-65 minutes to complete; there will also be on-site food trucks and a cafe. The event runs from Oct. 22-31.
