CANADA: A Latin Festival, Black History Month Events, CelticFest Vancouver, a Unique Art Installation and More

CALGARY: The Fiestaval Latin Festival—a free three-day event showcasing the culture, cuisine, music and dance of Central and South America—will take place July 22-24 at Calgary Olympic Plaza. The 13th edition of the event will showcase food from Mexico, Chile, Cuba, Colombia, Peru and El Salvador with 25 authentic food vendors along with 70 artisan and community vendors. There will also be live music, folkloric dance performances and dance lessons.

Standing just shy of 15 feet tall, The BEACON—a pillar of light made from over 60,000 1-liter water totes and a series of interactive choreographed light, sound and video shows—is on display daily through Feb. 27 in Enoch Park. The installation was imagined, designed and built by local art collective B!G ART for the Chinook Blast festival. The BEACON features 12 seemingly normal doors—but when opened, 10 of the doors are mapped with a choreographed light, sound and video show.

CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND: The Robertson Library at UPEI is hosting various Black History Month events, including an exhibition highlighting books by Black Canadian authors. The library will also host a free virtual event with Desmond Cole, the author of The Skin We’re In: A Year of Black Resistance and Power, on March 2, and is posting open discussion questions and resources on its Facebook page throughout the month.

VANCOUVER: Jurassic Quest will hit the Vancouver Convention Centre May 13-15 and then move to the Tradex in Abbotsford May 20-23. The interactive, family-friendly experience celebrates all things dinosaurs, with rides on robotic dinosaurs, baby dinosaur shows and more. Tickets for both locations start at $34.50, with unlimited ride passes for kids costing $52.

CelticFest Vancouver, the city’s annual celebration of Celtic culture, is returning in person from March 16-20. The 17th edition of the event will feature live programming including an all-ages outdoor public festival in Robson Plaza, plus live music performances, Irish and Scottish dancing, a pop-up marketplace, a family zone, a beer tent and more.
