BANFF: The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity hosts its 49th season of the Banff Playwrights Lab April 18-30, featuring eight Canadian writers undergoing a two-week residency at the Banff Centre. Each writer is accompanied by a collaborator—such as an artist, acting company or creator—who will attend for four days to assist in completing the writer's project. Participants developing new works are invited to join discussions about storytelling and performances in a hybrid world. The lab is designed to push the envelope of creating, sharing and exploring theatrical storytelling.
HALIFAX: Imbibe 2022 takes place May 25 from 7-9:30 p.m. at the Schooner Room in Casino Nova Scotia. The unique cocktail-centered event will bring together the province's top mixologists to curate more than 30 cocktails for attendees to try. Light snacks from over 25 restaurants will also be served, and a DJ will be in attendance to keep the party going. Guests can register (and find a list of participating exhibitors) on Savour Food & Wine Festival's website. Tickets are $68.50 per person.
ONTARIO: Restaurant and scratch kitchen Eureka! is slated to open in Ontario on June 6 across the street from the Toyota Arena. Eureka! prides itself on its creative craft beverage program, consisting of a selection of the best local craft beers and small-batch whiskeys as well as modern twists on classic cocktails. Menu highlights include American classics like Angus beef and bone marrow burgers, mac and cheese balls and a bourbon barrel cake for dessert. The space spans more than 4,700 square feet and can accommodate up to 179 guests for a seated meal. A patio area allows for an al fresco dining experience during the warmer months, and the spacious restaurant is anchored by an indoor/outdoor bar top designed to carry the lively atmosphere throughout the entire venue.
VANCOUVER: The 2022 DOXA Documentary Film Festival will take place May 5-15 at various theatres throughout the city, including the SFU Goldcorp Centre, the VIFF Centre, the Cinematheque and more, including online. Hosted by local nonprofit The Documentary Media Society, the 11-day festival was designed to showcase the best in modern documentary cinema and will feature not only in-person and streamed screenings, but also Q&A sessions with the filmmakers. Tickets start at $7 for online viewings and $13 for showings at the theatre.
The Ballet BC is closing out its 2021-2022 season with performances of What If, featuring pieces by German choreographer Felix Landerer and Canadian choreographer Dorotea Saykaly. The show is taking place May 12-14 at 8 p.m. each night at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Tickets are available on Ballet BC's website, starting at $21.75.
