CANADA: Calgary Marriott Collaborates with Canon for Photography Event, Ottawa to Host World Statistics Congress, Toronto Presents Black Vegan Holiday Market, and More

GLOBAL: Entertainment experiences producer ASM Global has announced three new hires aimed at expanding the company’s leverage of its portfolio of 350 arenas, stadiums, theaters, convention centers, and more. Bryce Townsend, the senior vice president of commercial partnerships, who comes to ASM Global with more than 20 years of strategic consulting, brand marketing, and commercial strategy experience. Meanwhile, the vice president of sponsorship sales and business development Kevin Dent has spent 25-plus years in various sports and lifestyle corporate sponsorship roles, including AT&T, NBA, MLS, the Summer Olympics, and more. Lastly, the director of marketing solutions Emily Wilson comes to ASM Global from digital and print publisher Dotdash Meredith.

CALGARY: Calgary Marriott Downtown has announced Socality x Canon Creator Lab, a unique holiday experience for those involved in photography, video, social media, and more. On Dec. 11 from 2-5 p.m., creative community members are welcome to connect, network, and create together around the Calgary Marriott’s rooftop skating rink. The rink overlooks nearby Stephen Avenue and will be decked out in lights, and as part of the Canon Creator Lab program—and in collaboration with The Camera Store—a selection of Canon gear will be available to try out to shoot during the event. For an escape from the winter weather, attendees will also have access to an adjacent room for snacks and hot chocolate. Creators are also welcome to bring their own skates to take advantage of the rooftop rink for themselves.

OTTAWA: Ottawa will host the International Statistical Institute (ISI) World Statistics Congress 2023, the leading event on statistics and data science worldwide. The event has been biannually organized since 1887 by the ISI, which is currently based in The Hague. From July 16-20, 2023, Ottawa will host more than 2,000 delegates representing the international community of statistics, which aims to support governments, healthcare systems, and business leaders. The four-day congress will take place at the Shaw Centre in Ottawa and will also make use of the Westin, Les Suites, Lord Elgin, Novotel, Sheraton, and University of Ottawa for accommodations, totaling more than 2,950 room nights. The Ottawa bid was won in 2020 with support from the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Carleton University, the University of Ottawa, and Statistics Canada based in Ottawa. 

TORONTO: The First Annual Toronto Black Vegan Holiday Market, open to everyone, will take place on Dec. 11 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. at Artscape Wychword Barns. Attendees at the event will have the opportunity to enjoy festive vegan meals and delicacies featuring African and Caribbean flavors. The menu will range from vegan versions of ethnic foods and drinks to brand-new holiday creations giving North American fruits and vegetables an African/Caribbean twist. Cruelty-free Afro-centric gifts—including jewelry, skincare, and plant-based health and wellness items created by African and Caribbean entrepreneurs—will also be available. 

VANCOUVER: Every day through Jan. 3, 2023, the Vancouver Aquarium will present festive magic at its Holiday Splash event. This family friendly event will feature “Scuba Claus” taking daily dives, 4D showings of The Polar Express, seasonal sweets and treats, and (of course) 65,000 animals surrounded by festive decor.
