Fred Dixon
President and CEO, NYC & Company
Based in: New York City
Additional Roles: Vice chair, U.S. Travel Association; co-chair, Meetings Mean Business Coalition; secretary/treasurer, Destinations International
How I got here: I’ve been fortunate to work in many sectors of the travel industry during my career, which has nurtured a broad perspective and appreciation that still pays dividends. From small to large destinations, major attractions, restaurants, entertainment, lodging and an airline, the relationships and experiences have woven together to prepare me for each subsequent chapter. Events have played a role all along the way. Whether it was promoting, managing, servicing or selling, the group event space has been integral to my story every step of the way.
Greatest career accomplishment: I’d have to say my 15-plus years and counting at NYC & Company continues to be my proudest moment. I had a dream of working for this remarkable organization and was fortunate to see it come to fruition. The people, the work, the community, the experience leave me evermore grateful and humbled.
A specific improvement I’ve made: The work we’ve undertaken to grow the big tent of tourism, hospitality and events across the five boroughs of NYC is an area that has been a game changer for our organization. Our free academy, Tourism Ready, is a great example. Providing free training to small businesses on how to best work with groups, events and travel sellers has brought economic and job growth into more communities while growing our destination product.
What I do outside of work: I seek experiences that keep me connected with friends and family in this fast-paced world. Travel and exploration of nature are always on the agenda.
What I'd tell my younger self: ‘Stay true to you, trust your instincts and enjoy every moment.’
