The Farragut North location of Morton’s the Steakhouse unveiled a new, 2,000-square-feet patio on Wednesday. An addition to the restaurant's several event rooms, the space can hold as many as 100 for receptions or 64 for seated affairs. The second-floor perch can also accommodate guests throughout the year—an appropriate move considering last week’s summery sun and this week’s snowy weather.

The patio features a retractable thin plastic sheet resistant to wind, rain, and whatever weather D.C. brings. To ensure that guests don’t feel stuck in a bubble, Morton’s has mounted 12- by 12-foot red umbrellas with built-in heaters designed to target seated diners directly (rather than warming the general patio). Australian company Celmec designed the system, and has used the same technology at the Sydney Opera Cafe. But don’t think you’ll be getting a tan: Each umbrella offers UV protection.
