Good thing that Paul Allaire, the chairman and CEO of Xerox, was being honored by Outward Bound USA, the organization that uses wilderness training programs to build young people's self-esteem. It was the same day that Xerox's stock took a 30 percent plunge--on top of dropping almost 76 percent in the past year. Where else would Allaire get that "you can do it" encouragement but a meeting of Outward Bound supporters?
Despite a poor stock day, the evening went on without a hitch. Robert DeDominic of Projects Plus orchestrated the event at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers that included a major dramatic moment: When the room went completely dark at the end of the cocktail hour, the venue's electronic doors rose to a night-time star scene in the banquet area. Guests had received Princeton Tec head lamps and maps to find their tables in the dark--a challenge appropriate for an event for Outward Bound. After their search, guests sat around centerpieces of mock campfires, designed by the benefit's chairwoman Candace Conard.
Those who followed the invitation's dress suggestion--black ties and sneakers--found their shoes came in handy when trying out the portable climbing wall, rented from Brewer's Ledge Inc. Guests also got the opportunity to participate in live and silent auctions, for everything from trips to Ireland to the summer's transportation craze, silver scooters.
