1. CONCERTS FOR THE DEAF: Music festivals such as Lollapalooza and South by Southwest are employing specialized sign-language interpreters to help deaf fans enjoy the experience. "At live music shows, [Barbie] Parker, 45, does not just sign lyrics—she communicates the entire musical experience. She mouths the words. She plays air guitar and air drums. She jams along with the bands." Texas Monthly/New York Times: http://nyti.ms/XOJjEb
From the opening party to a dance set with the Dirty Projectors as DJs, here's a lineup of SXSW events in Austin: Flavorpill: beta.flavorpill.com/austin2013
2. FASHION INSIDERS: Three low-profile producers are behind the top 85 fashion shows and events in New York, Paris, Milan, and London. The Financial Times: "In their hands is most of what the rest of the world sees. They act as producer, art director, scenographer, or choreographer. They can create an entire show concept or merely execute it; search and book venues; get sets, seating, lighting rigs, sound systems, and backstage areas built; produce seating plans, satisfy security, and fire regulations; instruct the models on how to walk in the 'right' way; coordinate music and make sure the cameras get the money shots." http://on.ft.com/WqwDZ8
3. FINANCE GALAS ARE BACK: Goldman Sachs has revived its partner dinner for the first time since 2006. New York magazine's Daily Intelligencer has the Instagram photos and a description of the gala at Pier 36, which one guest described as "the Golden Globes of investment banking!": http://nym.ag/XKQwVR
4. LEARNING FROM GROUPON: One lesson for restaurants from Groupon's struggles is that they need to take charge of their marketing. Grub Street Chicago: "Marketing means more than retweeting customer props or sharing a good media hit on Facebook. Those things don't inspire customers to act. Marketing also means more than posting a picture on Instagram and listing the primary ingredients of the dish." http://bit.ly/WlRvk8
5. ELEVATOR NIGHTMARE: Modern Family stars Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson were trapped in an elevator for nearly an hour on their way to Kids Night Out 2013, a fund-raiser for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City at the Sheraton Kansas City. Kansas City Star: "Many thought it was a joke when the emcee announced there would be a delay in the program because the stars were stuck in an elevator. About 15 minutes later they knew it wasn't a joke. The band played and many in the well-dressed crowd went to the bar. People were tweeting and taking pictures of the Fire Department. About a third of the crowd left before the actors got on stage." http://bit.ly/Z9AnsW
